PKU Arts Building


    About the School of Arts, Peking University
    The School of Arts, Peking University was founded on 11th, January 2006. It grew out of the Department of Art Studies, Peking University, which was founded in 1997. Professor YE Lang serves as the current dean, who is also a famous esthetician, member of the CPPCC National Committee and senior professor of Philosophy and Social Sciences, PKU.
    PKU has advocated and practiced the education of esthetics and arts since as early as the presidency of Mr. CAI Yuanpei. The School of Arts is committed to the principle that guided arts education in PKU, of integrating humanity and arts skills, theories and practice, all-around education and profession. It has made great progress in the discipline construction, all-around education and faculty construction, etc. The School is composed of 4 departments: the Department of Arts Studies, the Musicology Department, the Department of Fine Arts, and the Department of Film and Television Arts, and 6 institutes: the Cultural Industries Institute, the Center for Television Studies, the Calligraphy Art Study Institute, the Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera Art Institute, the Theatre Research Institute and the Institute of Chinese Fine Arts. The School enrolls 11 doctoral students, 56 master students, 150 undergraduates, more than 100 MFA students and more than 200 Executive Master candidates. For the past decade, nearly 2,000 visiting students have graduated from the School.
    The School of Arts is committed to promoting the arts education and disciplinary construction and offers an artistic environment for the University community, which will have great and lasting impact on the University's cause of developing into a world-class leading university.
    Project Information
    PKU Arts Building covers 6,517 square meters, with the building density of 30%, the green rate 40%, the plot ratio 1.8% and the cave height of 18 meters. The building area is planned to be 12,000 square meters. The building consists of 5 floors upper ground and 2 floors underground. It fulfills several functions, including the exhibition hall of fine arts, large-scale lecture theatres, the library, the conference room, digital multi-functional classrooms, the arts studio with the skylight, photography studio and the office of education administration.
    As the central venue of teaching and arts activities, the building is designed to fulfill multiple functions, such as teaching, research, practice, exhibition, administration, conference, etc. Besides the practical purpose, elegance, delicacy and originality are also among the distinguished characteristics of the design.
    After completion, it will help enrich the campus life, disseminate the principles of arts education in PKU and set an example for other comprehensive universities in the field of arts education.
