PKU Archive and Manuscript Collections Library |
PKU Library was established in 1912, one of the remaining fruits of Wu Hsu Reform. As a research-committed library, it enjoys the longest history in China and has played an irreplaceable role in shaping the destiny of the country.
Through the development of over a century, PKU Library has collected 1,500,000 volumes of archive and manuscript collections, leading the world with the quantity and quality. Among them, there are more than 200,000 rare books, including handwritten books of the 5th century, 250 handwritten Buddhist scriptures from the 7th to 9th century, 400 archive collections printed with xylograph from the 10th to 14th century, 200,000 archive collections written by hand or printed with xylograph and thousands of manuscript collections and books annotated by ancient scholars and writers. Many of these collections are preserved in PKU Library alone, of immeasurable historical and documentary value.
In order to preserve these invaluable volumes of archive and manuscript collections, PKU plans to build a modern library with advanced technology for the sake of both researchers and students at home and abroad.

In general, the design of the building will be featured with Chinese traditional architecture and gardens. With corridors, ponds and artificial hills around it, it will present enchanting scenery in harmony with that of Weiming Lake and become another landmark building on campus.
The total investment of the project is currently estimated to be RMB 20 million.
